My thoughts on "The expose project"

Liora K, photographer, and Jes Baker, blogger, created a project called "The expose project" which consisted of taking pictures of themselves along with 94 women to show what real female beauty is about, no Photoshop involved.
Baker wrote on her blog about this project and showed some photographs. The first phrases she wrote were

"Tell me something. When was the last time you opened up your browser and saw a beautiful image of a body shape that looked just like yours? When was the last time you saw an image of skin markings that looked just like yours? When was the last time you saw an image of breasts that looked just like yours? An ass that looked just like yours? Scars that looked just like yours? A belly that looked just like yours?"

Baker explains what they did, why, and so on, then she writes 

"They undressed because they wanted to share their curves and angles, smiles and frowns, firmness and softness, strength and fear... with you. With the world. With everyone who wonders if they are alone in their physical form."

This is not the first work about this theme and it isn't going to be the last one either, but I'm really happy to see average women posing in front of a camera feeling so comfortable about their flaws. I'm sure each of us knows gorgeous women feeling bad about themselves, and seeing these 96 women act like this is amazing. The last thing I like about this project is that it includes women of all shapes, not only curvy ones.
Aside from that, there are many things I don't like about this idea.
I hate people talking about "real" women when referring to normal ones. Beautiful and famous models aren't less real than women like me who do something else for living. Models have to be that thin, that tall, and all that kind of stuff to work as models. They follow strict diets, they workout, great professionals take care of their hair and create art works on their faces using makeup, they are heavily airbrushed, but is this their fault? NO! It's their job! They are naturally beautiful, but they are real women just like us.
I hate the fact lots of us feel ugly because they don't look like those people on tv. Have you ever wonder how many people would lose their job if we stopped shaving, buying trendy clothes or cosmetics? This system wants us to be beautiful in that way because it's a matter of business. This doesn't mean we won't find someone who likes us just the way we are, that all men look for a certain kind of woman, and, most of all, this doesn't mean we aren't beautiful! 
Although, as Baker writes at the end of her blog post, while looking at these photographs I found women whom body is similar to mine, this doesn't make me feel "not alone". I'm not the most confident person on earth, but I don't compare myself to other girls to improve my self-esteem. I can't stand it when women around me do this. I hate this negativity, and this lack of support between each other. We all should know women come in all shapes, sizes, and we should respect this. This kind of "happiness" is temporary. Real confidence doesn't come from gossiping about Beyoncé's cellulite.
For instance, you may be obese (really obese) and have the chance to change your lifestyle, but then you can see some of these photographs and be like "Alright, she is fat like me. I'll be fat forever, I will pretend I'm happy and proud about it because I enjoy eating unhealthy food, I hate working out, and I will tell skinny girls they are ugly to feel better about myself". The reason behind this project may be the perfect excuse to stop trying to be healthier and fitter.

Baker ha scritto sul suo blog di questo progetto e ha mostrato alcune foto. Le prime frasi che ha scritto sono

"Dimmi una cosa. Quando è stata l'ultima volta che hai aperto il tuo browser e ha visto una bellissima immagine di un tipo di fisico che fosse proprio come il tuo? Quando è stata l'ultima volta che hai visto un immagine di segni sulla pelle che fossero proprio come i tuoi? Quando è stata l'ultima volta che hai visto un immagine di seni che fossero proprio come i tuoi? Un sedere che fosse proprio come il tuo? Cicatrici che fossero proprio come le tue? Una pancia che fosse proprio come la tua?"

Baker spiega cosa hanno fatto, perché e così via, poi scrive

"Si sono spogliate perché volevano condividere le loro curve e i loro angoli, sorrisi e bronci, severità e dolcezza, forza e paura... con te. Con il mondo. Con tutti quelli che si chiedono se siano soli nella loro forma fisica."

Questo non è il primo lavoro su questo tema e non sarà neanche l'ultimo, ma sono molto felice di vedere donne normai posare davanti ad una macchina fotografica sentendosi così a loro agio con i propri difetti. L'ultima cosa che mi piace di questo progetto è che includa donne di tutti i tipi, non solo quelle con le curve.
A parte questo, ci sono molte cose che non mi piacciono di questa idea.
Odio quando le persone parlano di donne "vere" quando si riferiscono a donne normali. Le modelle bellissime e famose non sono meno vere di donne come me che fanno qualcos'altro per vivere. Le modelle devono essere così magre, così alte e tutte quelle cose per lavorare come modelle. Seguono diete strette, si allenano, ottimi professionisti si prendono cura dei loro capelli e creano opere d'arte sui loro visi usando il trucco, sono molto ritoccate in foto, ma è colpa loro? NO! È il loro lavoro! Sono belle di natura, ma sono donne vere proprio come noi.
Odio il fatto che molte di noi si sentano brutte perché non assomigliano a quelle persone in tv. Vi siete mai chiesti quante persone perderebbero il lavoro se smettessimo di farci la ceretta, comprare abiti alla moda o cosmetici? Questo sistema ci vogliono belle in quel modo perché è una questione di business. Questo non significa che non troveremo qualcuno a cui piacciamo così come siamo, che tutti gli uomini cercano un certo tipo di donna e che, soprattutto, questo non significa che non siamo belle!
Benché, come Jes Baker scrive alla fine del suo post, guardando queste foto abbia trovato donne con fisici simili al mio, questo non mi fa sentire "non sola". Non sono la persona più sicura di sé della Terra, ma non mi paragono ad altre ragazze per migliorare la mia autostima. Tutti dovremmo sapere che esistono donne di tutte le forme, taglie e dovremmo rispettarlo. Questo tipo di "felicità" è temporanea. La vera sicurezza in se stessi non deriva dallo sparlare della cellulite di Beyoncé.
Per esempio, potresti essere obesa e avere l'opportunità di cambiare il tuo stile di vita, ma poi potresti vedere queste foto e sentirti tipo "Va bene, è grassa come me. Sarò grassa per sempre, fingerò di esserne felice e orgogliosa perché mi piace mangiare schifezze, detesto allenarmi e dirò alle ragazze magre che sono brutte per sentirmi meglio con me stessa". La motivazione dietro questo progetto potrebbe essere la scusa perfetta per smettere di provare ad essere più sani e in forma..

Effortless beauty

"Honey, hurry up!" says my boyfriend when I'm still desperately trying to get the Olivia Palermo cheekbone look. I look at him saying I'll be ready in five minutes, and my jaw drops. He has dark shiny hair, starry green eyes, and the most beautiful smile I've ever seen. I say "Being an handsome man must be so easy for you". By that I mean good-looking by nature. 
Naturally good-looking like those who make me feel uncomfortable, not good enough. Handsome men are so perfect that I hate them.
Handsome men wake up in the morning as gorgeous as white roses, while we just want to cry thinking about the amount of concealer our face will need. Handsome men have big, bright, and happy eyes all the time, while we bless who invented nude eyeliner and his family tree. Handsome men wash their face with water, while our skin care routine includes ten different products for every flaw we think we have. Handsome men have beautiful, thick, and arched eyebrows, while we spend ages wondering which hair we should pluck to get the perfect shape. Handsome men have long, curly, and voluminous eyelashes, while we are obsessed the Kim K lash effect. Handsome men look amazing wearing a random t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers, while we struggle to find a nice outfit.
Normally I don't like metrosexuals, I prefer natural, effortless beauty. I love it when I must ask them about their beauty treatments because they are too OH MY GOD to be true.
Every time I see these beauties Mother Nature created, aside from admiring them in a creepy way, I wonder why this happens. Maybe because I don't like myself as much as I should? Maybe because I see unreal flaws of mine? I don't mind going out almost bare-faced, so why? I believe I'm just a slave to beauty. I can't get enough of it. Hopefully, my eyes will always be full of beauty.

"Tesoro, sbrigati!" dice il mio ragazzo mentre sto ancora cercando disperatamente di ottenere gli zigomi di Olivia Palermo. Lo guardo dicendo che sarò pronta in cinque minuti e mi cade la mascella. Ha i capelli scuri, lucidi, occhi verdi brillanti e il sorriso più bello che abbia mai visto. Dico "Deve essere facile per te essere un bel ragazzo". Con questo intendo bello innatamente.
Naturalmente belli come quelli che mi mettono a disagio, che non mi fanno sentire all'altezza. Gli uomini belli sono così perfetti che li odio.
Gli uomini belli si svegliano il mattino meravigliosi come le rose bianche, mentre noi vogliamo solo piangere all'idea di quanto correttore avrà bisogno la nostra faccia. Gli uomini belli hanno sempre occhi, grandi, luminosi e felici, mentre noi benediciamo chi ha inventato la matita nude e il suo albero genealogico. Gli uomini belli si lavano il viso con l'acqua, mentre la nostra routine di cura della pelle include dieci prodotti per ogni difetto che pensiamo di avere abbiamo. Gli uomini belli hanno sopracciglia bellissime, folte e arcuate, mentre noi passiamo troppo tempo a chiederci quale pelo strappare per ottenere la forma perfetta. Gli uomini belli hanno ciglia lunghe, curve e voluminose, mentre noi siamo ossessionate dalle ciglia alla Kim K. Gli uomini belli sono stupendi quando indossano una maglietta a caso, jeans e sneakers, mentre noi facciamo fatica a trovare un bell'outfit.
Di solito non mi piacciono i metrosexuals, preferisco la bellezza naturale, spontanea. Adoro quando devo fare domande sui loro trattamenti di bellezza perché sono troppo OH MIO DIO per essere veri.
Ogni volta che vedo queste bellezze create da Madre Natura, a parte ammirarle in modo inquietante, penso al perché mi capiti questo. Forse perché non mi piaccio quanto dovrei? Forse perché mi attribuisco difetti inesistenti? Non mi dispiace uscire quasi struccata, quindi perché? Credo che io sia solo una schiava della bellezza. Non ne ho mai abbastanza. Spero che i miei occhi saranno sempre pieni di bellezza.

After waiting months, "Yves Saint Laurent" has been finally released! Another film will be dedicated to the designer, but only this one has been authorized by Pierre Bergé.
While I was watching the trailer for the first time, I suspected they would have omitted his childhood years, and begun with the Dior ones. I was right, but, unlike in this one, at least here we can have an idea of how his family was like before he began to work as the head designer of Dior.
I think the movie can be split in two parts. The first part is about a humble, and shy hard-worker with an incredible talent in the haute couture world, in the second one Yves realizes prêt-à-porter suits the society best, and loses control.
If you have already watched "Yves Saint Laurent - L'amour Fou", this movie seems quite accurate, since it makes visible what Bergé talks about in the documentary. All the main characters are present, such as Pierre Bergé, Victoire Doutreleau, Loulou de la Falaise, Betty Catroux, Jacques De Bascher. "Yves Saint Laurent" also includes real interviews, and a few of his quotes. I don't know if this is due to Yves' sexual orientation, but in many scenes the attention is drawn onto male bodies.
The first thing person I fell in love with was Pierre Niney. His elegance is disarming. He is the perfect actor to interpret the designer. They really look alike both aesthetically and temperamentally. He evolved with his character throughout the story.
The other character I appreciated the most is Victoire (Charlotte Lebon), one of his muses. She is gorgeous, vain, and feminine. Actually, I loved everything about the first part of the movie. It was so beautiful I felt like I was about to cry.
I didn't like the second one. Seeing a genius like Yves waisting his life made me feel sad, hearing Bergé telling about this horrible time they went through was enough.
I would have liked to see some more fashion shows, and "L'Amour Fou" is still my favourite but, overall, I liked this movie.

Dopo mesi d'attesa, finalmente"Yves Saint Laurent" è uscito! Un altro film verrà dedicato al designer, ma solo questo è stato autorizzato da Pierre Bergé.
Mentre stavo guardando il trailer per la prima volta, temevo che avrebbero omesso gli anni della sua infanzia e iniziato da quelli da Dior. Avevo ragione, ma, a differenza di questo, almeno qui possiamo avere un'idea di come fosse la sua famiglia prima che iniziasse a lavorare come direttore creativo di Dior.
Credo che il film possa essere diviso in due parti. La prima parte racconta di un umile e timido grande lavoratore con un talento incredibile nel mondo dell'alta moda, nella seconda Yves realizza che il prêt-à-porter fosse più adatto alla società e perde il controllo.
Se avete già guardato "Yves Saint Laurent - L'amour Fou", questo film sembra molto preciso, visto che rende visibile quello di cui Bergé parla nel documentario. Tutti i personaggi principali sono presenti, come Pierre Bergé, Victoire Doutreleau, Loulou de la Falaise, Betty Catroux, Jacques De Bascher. "Yves Saint Laurent" include anche vere interviste e alcune delle sue citazioni. Non so se questo sia dovuto all'orientamento sessuale di Yves, ma in molte scene l'attenzione è focalizzata su corpi maschili.
La prima cosa persona di cui mi sono innamorata è stato Pierre Niney. La sua eleganza è disarmante. È l'attore perfetto per interpretare il designer. Si assomigliano molto sia esteticamente che caratterialmente. Evolve con il suo personaggio durante la storia.
L'altro personaggio che ho apprezzato di più è Victoire (Charlotte Lebon), una delle sue muse.
È bellissima, vanitosa e femminile. A dire il vero, mi è piaciuto moltissimo tutto della prima parte del film. Era così bello che mi sentivo come se stessi per piangere.
Non mi è piaciuta la seconda. Vedere un genio come Yves buttarsi via mi ha rattristato, ascoltare Bergé raccontare questo periodo orribile che avevano passato era abbastanza.
Mi sarebbe piaciuto vedere più sfilate e "L'Amour Fou" è ancora il mio preferito, ma, complessivamente, ho apprezzato questo film.

I was looking for a book on Alexander McQueen when I bumped into this biography. The cover caught my attention due to the lack of models walking down the catwalk, the designer sketching, pinning or cutting fabric, or things like these as I would expect from an ordinary monograph.
You can't see it here, but on the top we can read "The most comprehensive McQueen biography thus far" - THE ECONOMIST. Needless to say I had high expectations.
The foreword was written by Daphne Guinness, "a designer, editor, model, muse, and stylist".
The next preface is a short synopsis about what kind of person he was and about changes he introduced in fashion.
The introduction tells a lot of information about his life, such as biographical details, who influenced him the most, and his passions, which make the reader understand his work better. 
As I said, this book is a biography, and it tells you not only about his career, but also focuses on the life before success. May seem absurd, but some biographies don't. It doesn't even picture the designer as a god, but as a human, because it tells the reader the mistakes he made, and difficulties he had to face. The author pays a lot of attention to his sexual orientation, which may seem weird at the beginning, but soon you will understand why. You can find the description of every fashion show of his including name, year, Alexander's quotes and inspiration, pieces of his interviews, press opinions, information about hairdos and makeup, and an explanation about the techniques, fabrics, cuts, colours, and models he chose. Here and there you can read pages written by people who tells how working with McQueen was like, how was he like, or their thoughts about a particular collection.
The graphic is clean, and there are images only where it's needed.These images shows the designer, people close to him, his inspirations, his creations, and each of them have a detailed caption. "Alexander McQueen s/s 1997" and that's it. No, forget about it.
Judith Watt, the authour, is Head of Fashion History at Central Saint Martins, and she made me learn loads of new fashion-related words, (even if it's written in English, I found it quite easy to read) and wrote a great biography being impartial.
This is the kind of fashion book I would like to find in bookstores because there are many pages to read, it's absorbing, fascinating, tidy (it has only six, well- written chapters), cheap, and makes you understand that a designer doesn't wake up in the morning like "Oh, I want to sketch this", but he translates his life into his creations.

Stavo cercando un libro su Alexander McQueen quando mi sono imbattuta in questa biografia. La copertina ha attirato la mia attenzione data la mancanza di modelle che camminavano lungo la passerella, lo stilista che disegnava, spillava o tagliava il tessuto o cose del genere che mi sarei aspettata da una normale monografia. Non riuscite a vederlo qui, ma in alto si legge "La biografia più completa su McQueen finora" - THE ECONOMIST. Inutile dire che avessi delle alte aspettative.
La prefazione è stata scritta da Daphne Guinness, "una designer, direttrice, modella musa e stylist".
La prefazione successiva è un breve riassunto su che tipo di persona fosse e sui cambiamenti che ha introdotto nella moda.
L'introduzione dà molte informazioni sulla sua vita, come dettagli biografici, chi l'abbia influenzato di più e le sue passioni, che fanno capire meglio il suo lavoro al lettore.
Come ho detto, questo libro è una biografia e racconta non solo della sua carriera, ma si concentra anche sulla vita prima del successo. Potrebbe sembrare assurdo, ma alcune biografie non lo fanno. Non dipinge neanche il designer come un dio, ma come una persona che ha commesso errori e dovuto affrontare difficoltà. L'autore pone l'accento sul suo orientamento sessuale, che potrebbe sembrare strano all'inizio, ma presto capirete perché. Potete trovare la descrizione di ogni sua sfilata, compresi nome, anno, citazioni e ispirazioni di Alexander, frammenti delle sue interviste, opinioni della stampa, informazioni su acconciature e trucco e la spiegazione delle tecniche, dei tessuti, tagli, colori e modelle che ha scelto. Qua e là potete leggere pagine scritte da persone che raccontano come fosse lavorare con McQueen, che persona fosse o i loro pareri su una certa collezione.
La grafica è pulita e ci sono immagini solo dove serve. Queste immagini mostrano lo stilista, le persone a lui care, le sue ispirazioni, le sue creazioni e ognuna di loro ha una didascalia dettagliata. "Alexander McQueen S/S 1997" e basta. No, scordatevelo.
Judith Watt, l'autrice, insegna storia della moda alla Central Saint Martins, mi ha fatto imparare tantissimi nuovi termini legati alla moda (anche se è scritto in inglese, l'ho trovato abbastanza facile da leggere) e ha scritto una biografia grandiosa essendo imparziale.
Questo è il tipo di libro di moda che vorrei trovare nelle librerie perché ci sono molte pagine da leggere, è appassionante, affascinante, ordinato (ha solo sei capitoli ben scritti), economico e ti fa capire che uno stilista non si sveglia la mattina pensando "Oh, voglio disegnare questo", ma trasferisce la sua vita nelle sue creazioni.
